Hi, I’m Allie Schmidt.

(And, no, I didn’t take my husband’s last name…)

I’m a freelance writer, disability consultant, ALS advocate and entrepreneur.

What a mouthful?!

But, most importantly, I’m also a mom…and a disabled mom at that.

I have a rare form of ALS that has made my arms paralyzed. To answer the question I already know you’re thinking – yes, that means I cannot pick up my son. But that doesn’t mean he’s not getting copious amounts of cuddles in other ways!

HOW DID I GET HERE?

Before becoming disabled, I worked in marketing for some of the world’s most iconic brands, including Fruit of the Loom, Spalding and Tractor Supply, Co. I’ve worked on campaigns with Target, Walmart and Amazon.

However, everything changed when I found out that I had a terminal disease at 26-years-old. My values shifted and I no longer wanted to sit at a desk and chase paper for someone else.

Shortly after, I became pregnant. My husband and I decided it would be best for me to stay home with Asher and soak up all the precious moments that I could.

But my passion for creating something bigger never wavered.

WHAT IS DISABILITY DAME?

Essentially, Disability Dame is a website that gives tips to moms with disabilities and chronic illnesses.

When I became pregnant, I searched online for guidance from other moms with disabilities. I wanted to know the tricks they had learned and how they coped with being a chronically ill mom.

To my surprise, advice was nowhere to be found!

So, I set out on a mission to help the millions of other women who were in the same spot as me and spread awareness about the lack of accessible products available to moms with chronic illness and disability.
